SPAYING AND NEUTERING


     We highly recommend spaying or neutering all dogs and cats, unless they are intended for breeding.  (Only pets with the very best health and conformation, with no birth or genetic defects, should be bred.)

     Spaying (females) or neutering (males) can be done as early as 2 or 3 months of age, but we recommend waiting until 5 or 6 months of age. Spaying females before the first heat period usually prevents mammary tumors and also prevents troublesome heat periods. Neutering males prevents male behavior problems as well as testicular tumors, perineal hernias, perianal tumors and prostate problems. Finally, spaying and neutering prevents unwanted pregnancies and births. Spaying or neutering can be done even at a very old age, if not previously done.

     After an appointment is made, pets are usually dropped off at our clinic between 7am and 8am and picked up the same day between 4pm and 6pm.  If cats are also being declawed, they are kept overnight until the following afternoon.
